what to look for
what do i look for when buying a used diesel. im new to the diesel pickups. i'm looking to buy a 94 - 99 2wheel drive for pulling my travel trailer and 600 mile weekend trips empty for fuel milage. all help is welcome thank you all in advance. jared
Welcome to the site Jared. I guess what I would check is the "standard" stuff for any used vehicle. Then check the engine compartment over quite well. Look for the obvious oil leaks, fuel leaks, if the fuel system was "tampered" with (you will see the paint missing or broken around screws) if it is a 12v. See if it is possible to see any maintenance records or even talk to the previous owner. Good luck and when you find one, post about it here and you can get vehicle specific advice.

This question is a bit hard to answer - 94-98 are 12V and 99 are 24 V - two completely different animals. Well need a bit more specific info. Be patient and find the one you want. Good Luck.
im in the hunt. my gmc w/454 is getting 10-12 miles to the gallon and i have been driving alot lately. my friends and family tell me diesel is the way to go for milage and power. my father inlaw has a ford with a power stroke and loves it. i like the look of dodges better. is the fuel milage as good as the say.
i'm looking at a 1995 2500 auto 2wd reg cab. they are asking 10500 for it. it only has 60,000 miles on it. my 454 gets 12 on the hiway empty if i keep my foot light. im excited about getting a diesel pu.

$10500 seems kinda high for the year. If it is in good shape, and the mileage is right, then I would seriously consider it. Just don't let the excitement get "in the way" of really looking it over good. I would really question why the mileage is so low....................

i talked to the lady she said her husband passed away last feb. and the family didnt want the truck. she also said they had used it to pull a 24' pull behind trailer back and forth from kc to somewhere in tx twice a year, so i can maybe see the miles. is it bad on a cummins to not be driven, i know from experiance (sp) that gas motors need driven or they will have problems (bearings) and gaskets. same on diesels i supose. jared
all right i did it. ibought a 94 reg cab 2wh auto all stock has right at 60k. paid 8650. for it. it is a larime slt. ive had it for a week and two days and im getting 23mpg and the torque is ok for what i need. BUT i ordered the tst #6 anyway thats what they recomend for an auto. im still looking at guages (suggestions). i have 2 q's #1 exhuast... ok to gut cat... better to go to 4in... 5in... with or with out cat? #2 intake....k&n or ?????? and i guess what order thats 3q's probley more to come thanks jared
1)i'm guessing most the people on here no longer have theier cats, almost none of the after market exhaust keep the cats either, just order a 4in turbo back exhaust and put it on. 4in is plenty.
2)NO k&n get either an afe megacannon or scotty2
3)FIX YOUR KDP (killer dowell pin in timing case) it could fall out and do lots of damage
4)isspro,diprocol or autometer (egt,boost,trans)

good luck with your purchase, the dodge diesel not only looks better but it is a hell of alot more reliable than a powerstroke. i know i have been through the powerstroke experience and it isn't pretty when ford doesn't even back up their product when you have many problems.
