What does a 97 12v auto tranny cost ?

My dad lives up in northern BC (Canada ) in a small town . He has a 97 , 12 valve with a Auto tranny . He thinks it's pretty much shot . ( been repaired a time or two and gone again) so he's looking for a rebuild . I'm not too far from Vancouver BC and going to start looking for a tranny for him. Nothing crazy , just another stocker or similar. What's a good price approx should I agree upon ? And any recommendations where to buy ? Thanks

I cannot recommend anyone in BC for you - only people we have dealt with up there turned out to be - uuummmmm.... less than satisfactory.
That said, we just had a complete rebuild of the $8k DTT transmission that failed in our 96 CTD 3500 work truck, by a good shop here in Monroe, WA USA, and it ran just over $4100 US all told. Torque converter was a smoking heap of wretched rubble, and replacing that was a significant portion of the cost.

Best of luck to you!

ATS in Denver rebuilt my trans in 2001. I've got 234,000 miles on the rebuild with no problems. There are a fair number of diesel shops in both the U.S. and Canada who are affiliated with them and who can do their rebuild. Do it once and do it right.

I agree with Robert Rausch about the ATS Transmissions.

I have had them in almost all of my Dodge CTD Pickups and they are well built, they hold up well and have a great warranty. The ATS Tranny in my 1996 Dodge CTD now has over 100,000 miles on it!

Here is their toll free number to locate an ATS Dealer close to you:
1-800-949-6002

Good luck!

Thanks guys . I just talked to BD Diesel in Abbotsford BC , they want over $6500 for the torque converter/ tranny combo. They said if I only buy the transmission and use our converter , that will void the warranty .

Anyone ever use "monster transmission now"

I would stay away from Monster......

Just for grins, does your dad have a decent local trans shop near him? If not, how far from him are you?

The reason I say that is Goerend sells all the parts as a kit, and has local trans shops build them. The secret is in the valve body and TQ anyway, and the Torqueflite is one of the easier transmissions to build.

If you are comfortable with ATS they do the same thing.

I had a local shop rebuild mine for $3500
Dealership will swap it out with a OEM unit for $4400 with a 3 year warranty.

Whatever you decide make sure you at least upgrade your torque converter from that lousy stock SINGLE DISC unit to a TRIPLE DISC from one of the major aftermarket Dodge CTD Transmission companies like Goerend, ATS, Suncoast or Performance Converters. All of those companies offer good triple disc converters which will hold up MUCH better than any stock unit.

Besides the Triple-Lok, ATS offers a Five Star TC.

Thanks for all the ideas everyone . I called ATS , and they have one dealer in my province . To save some money they said I should think about using theses guys .

Automatic and Standard Rebuilt Transmissions

$2600 for a rebuilt one . I never committed to anything yet . Even checked the wreckers . For about $900 they have one out of a 96 dually. They also gave one out of a 2002 . Just throwing stuff out there.
