The KDP is a locating dowel in the front of the block that tends to work loose over time. If it is allowed to fall out, it will be forced between the gears and the case, usually breaking a large chunk out and creating a huge oil leak.

if it does happen to you and a new case is warranted you will not have to tab it. the new case holds the pin captive. it cannot come out

I have the KDP repair kit. Now I just need to do it soon. I haven't really been driving the truck, but it's also been 114F and higher here in the desert!

This is my last Arizona summer! Man, I am sick and tired of this heat!!!!

There is no rule for it, its an engine part and can fail at any time. The repair is cheap and easy in comparison to pulling the front gear cover to repair the damage. I did mine at 150,000 km an it was hanging 1/4" out. It may have stayed there or not, but it wasn't where it was supposed to be. I have 350,000 on it now and its worth not worrying about.

I've seen KDP cracked case damage ranging from 48-325k miles.
Mileage makes no difference, it can happen any time.

If you take the cover off to look at it definately do the fix. I would do it sooner than later cause its not hard to do. My only mistake was jacking around with trying to get my fan off for a while until infidel or somebody told me to just remove the fan pulley bolts so you can remove the fan and its mount all in one. After that its a piece of cake if you remember how the ess wire is routed and where the longer bolts go. I installed the new seal on my work bench. I couldnt imagine trying to install the seal after.
