Water Pump Issues

My water pump finally gave out on my 1996, it was still original, so feel it did good. The question i have is, I got a new one and in the box is an Oring with it, but the one I took off the truck had no oring nor gasket,, but it has never leaked. I tried putting the oring on the pump and installing it, but it will not tighten flush with the block like the old one was and i am worried if I tighten it more it will break the water pump. Any ideas what to do?

Thanks for any ideas

Are you sure the old o-ring isn't just siezed into the block? It should have come out but may be harder than steel after this much time.
