wastgate question
Re:wastgate question
doodah,
Here's the description of a wastegates job according to "Diesel Engine & Fuel System Repair" by Dagel & Brady:

"A wastegate turbocharger is designed to improve engine low-end performance and transient response, limit peak cylinder pressures, lower heat rejection and turbo speed, and reduce exhaust emissions. The system can be adjusted to limit the maximum amount of boost dependin on certain application needs, and prvides improved throttle response at both the low-end and midrange loads."

When I first bought my truck, I slid the cam plates ahead and plugged off the wastegate both ways. That made her spool up a lot quicker, but didn't have a gauge to know how much boost. I know it had more though. Hope this helps.

Re:wastgate question
WOW! That was pretty technical. I'll try and explain it in english. Turbos are (like everything) a compromise. In order to get quick boost response (minimal turbo lag) you need to run a fairly small exhaust housing. The problem with that is that the boost will quickly become excessive and can cause the turbo to stall (not a good thing). A wastegate allows the advantages of the smaller turbo but it bleeds off excessive pressure before the turbo stalls. If you block off the signal line to the wastegate like DeereDiesel says you will gain boost but without fuel boost is nothing but pressurized air. Therefore you have to either move the stock fuel plate forward like DeereDiesel also says or you have to replace the fuel plate with an aftermarket one like TST makes. There is one problem with just blocking the signal line to the wastegate, the turbo can stall. My advice if you want more boost and power and you have a 2nd generation, 12 valve Ram, get a fuel plate kit that includes the bleed elbow for the wastegate signal and you'll be well ahead of the game. I hope this helps.

John
