Valve Adjust

I just had my valves adjusted and I can hear the valve train now...even over the noisy diesel. The dealer said before the adjustment the intakes were tight and the exhausts were loose. Now I can hear a definate ticking, especially when slowing down.

Am I just not used to the new noise after adjustment or should I be worried?

Re:Valve Adjust

It all depends on how much you trust the dealership's work. If they do alot of CTD work then probably no problem. Better yet you can double check their work by at least checking a couple cylinders. An easy link under http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/val.../12_valve.html
Watch fuel mileage, power and temps to see if major changes. If so, take it back for recheck.

Re:Valve Adjust

Did they adjust them when the were hot? I believe valve adjustments are supposed to be done with a warm valve train....

....have a 24 V so I wouldnt know too much about valve adjustments - I was pretty sure I read that your were supposed to adjust hot -> Looks like I was wrong..

In any event, they should be able to go over it quick and check tolerances if you dont feel its right.

Re:Valve Adjust

Dodge specifies "cold" for valve adj.
I always had to leave mine overnight so they could start in morning on cold engine.

Re:Valve Adjust

It may not be a bad idea to have your local Cummins shop go over it one more time... its a little cheaper than a new head.

Re:Valve Adjust

After taking the truck back to the dealer and having them drive it and re-check the valves they said they were right on and they couldn't hear any noise. I called my local Cummins guy as one of you suggested and he said "no valve train noise is acceptable if the valves are adjusted correctly". He agreed to listen to it if I brought it in and tell me if they were out of adjustment. I casually mentioned all of thios to the dealer and when I picked up my truck last night the noise was mysteriously gone!! Imagine that! I don't trust that dealer anymore. Anyway, thanks to all who wrote in.
