Turn off the overdrive... all the time????

I have a 98 Automatic. I have been told by more than one person that I should ALWAYS turn the overdrive off when driving around town. And that they only time I should engage it is when I get on the highway, is that true?? The explanation that I have been given is that all the torque on the engine burns up the clutch packs in the tranny when the OD is engaged in stop and go traffic. What do you all say?

I keep mine turned off unless I'm on the highway going 55 or more.
Stock tranny went 212k

I turn mine off, and shift manually...not that it really makes a difference, but I like the way it shifts.

The reason for turning off the OD below 55mph, is to keep the pressures in the tranny up...below 55mph in OD, the engine RPM is too low to hold good pressure at higher loads!

If you have 4.10 gears, it's not a big deal!

Agreed, even with my stock 47RE I always locked out OD unless I broke 55-60mph.

Good advice....unless you have a Goerend tranny, and a GD 3 disc TC.

I'm still gonna do it with my DTT...what's the difference? Maybe I don't need to, but it's not like pushing a button is work or anything?

the o/d off button is in the end of the gear selector, push it for on or push it again for off..

Wow, I didn't think I would find the consensus that I did about turning it off. It sure seems like Dodge wants it on as that is the default position when you start the beast up. See my next post on mileages before rebuild.

It's simple to turn it around so it defaults to off. Instructions here http://dodgeram.org/tech/mods/transm..._inverter.html
