Question Turbo rebuild difficulty?

Hey all,

Just checked the endplay on my turbo today, (truck has 128k) and I'm not quite happy with the results. There is definite radial play on the compressor side. No scraping or anything like that. I know the bearings ride in oil, but .. The slop makes me a little leery.

Is it time to rebuild the turbo? I'd rather do it early than trash the housing and blades, IF I can do it myself.

How hard is it to rebuild the turbo? I checked out the directons on Holset's site, and it didn't seem TOO hard, but thought I'd ask for input here.

I would definately get some clearance specs and check it before rebuilding. Not sure were to find them. Maybe the Holset website or some one elese may have them.

DZLPWR is right, check it out some more before you get to excited. I thought mine was bad when I could wiggle it, then checked here and found out that it is not a big deal. My truck has 220,000 miles on it and no problems. The previous owners never knew to idle the truck before shutting it off. Not the mileage nor the driving habbits have hurt mine, so you are more than likely just seeing the play that is their without oil psi..

welcome aboard

Max radial (up/down) runout .013-.02"
Max axial (fore to aft) runout .001-.005

You can download rebuild instructions here, all 58 pages of them> http://www.holset.co.uk/files/4_4_1-...%20manuals.php

Many pros recommend the turbo be balanced after a rebuild, something very few folks have the equipment to perform.
