i remember the first time i changed my filter and had the same problems the more u fool around with and take the filter off and on the more air you'll get in the system....like Bill said u gotta loosen the top screw on top of the filter and prime the buttom manually...use a lil piece of wood or something to save ur thumb....u should see the fuel coming out then tighten it...if that doesnt work the u gotta keep that nut open and crank it till fuel spits out......wither way ur gonna get alot of white smoke and it may take a while...i pumped the go pedal while cranking till it finally caught...it ran rough for a min and i kept the rpms up....then its all good
its just not a pleasant experience changing the fuel filter

Just thought I'd give you folks an update. I replaced the lift pump this past weekend and she seems to be runnin' fine. Been a long week tryin' to figure out the exact part to replace, Dodge didn't seem to help me much. The lift pump they sell is not the mechanical pump that came on the truck originally. They sell an electric pump to retrofit in the place of the old one. I didn't want to go that route, so I searched around to find the pump elsewhere. Cummins sells the pump for 165 bucks...they forgot to tell me they are closed on Saturday so I had to look elsewhere to get my part. Ended up getting a pump from my local O'Reilly's auto parts store, $142. Dodge told me years ago that there was a pump in the fuel tank as well. Turns out that only the gasoline motors have fuel pumps in the tank (at least for that year). My fuel guage went out just as the warranty went out and I have never replaced it due to the high cost of the part from Dodge. Guess I finally found a dealer with a clue, cuz that part is $56 bucks. Guess that's my next project.... I sure appreciate all the help on this one!

I didn't get the part number, but I can call them tomorrow and get it. It's called a "fuel tank module", not the "fuel pump module" that is the the gas trucks. I'll get it this weekend and post it for you.
I guess I didn't notice my truck's performance going down lately. After the lift pump was replaced, it screams like it used too!
