Fuel Filter change...Truck won't start!

First off, I was having a problem with my trucking starting to miss under a load or when it reached about 2000 rpms. Sounded like a fuel pressure issue to me, so I decided to change the fuel filter, since I was sure it was over due (I've put about 25K on the truck since I've had it and I haven't changed it). I swapped the filter out and under the advise of a mechanic at the local Dodge dealership, used the method of cracking open the injector lines. Now the truck will not prime and will not start. I'm not getting any fuel delivered to the filter housing. What problem have I caused myself?

Sounds like the lift pump has taken the big dirt nap.
Very common problem.
Unfortunately, most folks without a full time fuel pressure gauge only notice it after changing the fuel filter.
The Injection pump WILL draw enough fuel to keep running (until you open the system), but will not have enough excess fuel to keep itself cool.

I'm assuming you don't have a fuel pressure gauge??....

Sounds like the lift pump has gone tango uniform. If you didn't already have air in the VP-44, I've seen trucks restarted in this situation (just to get them to the shop for repair) by using a compressed air hose and rag (or tennis ball with a hole cut through it for the air hose) to pressurize the fuel tank and force fuel through the lift pump into the filter housing.

I don't have a fuel pressure gauge. When you say lift pump, I assume that you are talking about the fuel pump?

Well, that comes as no surprise. Where is the best place to get the new pumps?

Is there any way to tell if the lift pump is about to go bad? I just bought an 01 with 140k on it and don't have a lot of history on it. It also does not have any additional gauges. Is there anything that I can look for or keep an eye on so it does not leave me stranded on the roadside??

Yes - additional gauges. Specifically, a fuel pressure gauge.
