Truck won't start

I have a 1996 Dodge diesel with a standard transmission. The truck was sold originally in Washington State. I have owned the vehicle since January 2003 and it has been great. Last night I drove down to the beach (I live in Hawaii) and took the dogs for a walk. On getting into the truck to come home it spins over but does not start. I had a friend tow me home and have just thought about checking things out. About 2 months ago it failed to shut off and I turned the key off and on 4 or 5 times before it shut down. It then did it again withing a couple of minutes that same night but has done nothing out of the ordinary since. I suspect the fuel shut down solenoid but need help on checking the system as the fuel solenoid costs $600+ here and I want to be sure. Any help will be appreciated.
Fishinghaoliboy

Fishinghaoliboy
Your problem could be the shutdown solenoid, but also there could be a problem with the starter contacts sticking.

Whatever the situation, I would advise you not to replace the fuel solenoid for $600! Use a throttle cable to control the fuel supply instead. If you do a search on the site, I think that you can find instructions for a cable fix.

The use of electrical shut downs instead of cables only became popular when the "masses" started to go diesel and there was a fear of runaway vehicles left parked with the fuel cable engaged.
good luck

Re:Truck won't start

One possibility of the truck running on is worn contacts in the starter. For about $50 you can buy a kit to rebuild the contacts. Takes about 30 minutes to puill the starter, throw int he new contacts adn put the starter back in. Stops the truck run on and also makes it crank everytime. The Fuel solenoid relay can cause the cranking and no start scenario.

turn the key on, under the injector pump is a lever, raise this lever after you have the key on and then try to crank. If it starts it might just be the relay. $50 at dodge.

Juat a possibility.
Don Miller
