Transmission trouble. Need advice.
Transmission is shot. Still does fair empty, but when I hook to my trailer it shudders, acts crazy, will not lock up sometimes, etc. Truck now has 272,000 miles with 212,000 on a rebuilt 47rh. Truck did not do much until I bought it at 260,000. I need to be able to tow approx. 15,000lbs. Is this possible with the 47rh? If so whose transmission, torque converter, valve body etc.? Am I going to have to spend $3000 + for a transmission? I am a little hesitant to spend a lot on a truck with this many miles. Thanks for any help.
If the truck runs good and you have tabed the kdp spend some money on a good trans and it will be like a new truck. I was going to get mine rebuilt localy with a goerend converter and valve body but they didn't want to warranty it with others parts. I ended up getting a 47rh Goerend Trans with valvebody, builit apply lever and a 100k mile warranty from dave along with a tripple disk with a lifetime warranty. Give him a call I dont think he will try to oversell you anything. He's got one of the best warrantys in the industry and will stand behind his products thats gotta be worth something.
If maintained properly, that's not a lot of miles. If you're going to replace the tranny, upgrade to a 47re. I'd think it's a direct bolt on, but you might have to reflash your pcm or whatever. The 47re locks the torque converter so you'll save fuel.
Ok, time for school, while they are almost the same, there are major differences between the 47RH and the 47RE. The RH stands for Rear wheel drive and Hydraulically controlled. The RE means Rear wheel drive and Electronically controlled.
The length of the RH is longer than the RE unit, direct bolt in is not possible. Drive line would have to be modified. Not to meantion you'd need some controls to run the RE.
The RH's first 3 speeds are hydraulically governed by the governor in the overdrive housing, thats why RH's are longer. The overdrive and lockup are controlled by the PCM through 2 solenoids and the plug is only 3 wires.
The RE's are Electronically controlled through the PCM, the overdrive section is shorter because it doesn't have to house a hydraulic governor anymore. Instead it has a speed sensor that reads the output shaft speed from the park notches. In addition to that sensor it has a governor pressure sensor and solenoid to control the pressure, it also has the same solenoids for overdrive and lockup. Now the plug is larger and has 8 or 10 pins.
