Transmission Shifts or Engine Revs w/o Gas

My 1996 2500 4wd long box is a stock unit. My current problem is: the transmission seems to move in and out of gear at the same speed of about 70km/hr, even though I have not applied gas or let up. I am wondering if it is a transmission, engine or computer problem?

So your saying while you are holding the throttle steady, and cruising at a steady speed in 4th gear, then you see the tach going up and down a couple hundred rpm?

That's a "dirty" signal going from the TPS to the computer, and it's causing the torque converter to hunt in and out of lockup.
Nowadays, usually you can install a signal filter and it will go away. But on the rare occasion you'll have to replace the TPS and add the signal filter.
I take it you're in Canada? Call DTT = Diesel Transmission Technology, they're in Abbotsford, they'll sell you the signal filter.

ok dont mean to steal your thread but i have a ? of the same sort my truck will occasionly do that in 3rd and 4th gear once i have lock up. if i ease into it it wont slip but if i give it more throttle it will slip pretty bad. i originnaly thought that the tranny was going but it doesnt slip sometimes. also when i first start it , it will roll forward ifi have it in reverse, same as if i but it in drive it can rol backwards. do yal have any ideas also takes quite a bit of throttle to reach 60

Thanks. I will email DTT for a signal filter. I am new to the diesel truck and am wondering if you have any suggestions on a good service manual for the Dodge 2500 1996 auto 4wd long bock?

Try adjusting the TPS before you buy anything.
Instructions> http://dodgeram.org/tech/transmissio...TPS_adjust.htm

I've messed around with filters, isolating wires and cleaning the TPS with no long term results. Sometimes you just have to break down and buy a new TPS. Available though most autoparts, no need to get ripped off by the dealer.
