Transmission seems like its hunting.

I have a 1996 Dodge Ram 3500 Dually and lately it seems like it is shifting between high and low gear much too often. I took it to a transmission place and they said it was a bad TPS sensor. Went to dealer and bought new one for $250 bucks. Seemed like it fixed it for a day but now it is doing the same thing.
Has anyone else had the same problem and if so, what did you do to correct it?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am retiring from the NAVY in 36 days and am driving back to Illinois. I would like to have this problem remedied before I leave sunny California.

Thanks.
Ron

If your talking about shifting in and out of over drive, then it could be you just need to adjust your TPS using a volt meter.

Mine use to do the same thing. I drilled out the holes and adjusted the voltage according to the link below and now mine shifts fine.

Pappyman,
I talked to another transmission shop yesterday and he said the same thing. I'm going to check it out today. Do you know how much they cost?

The sensor from the Dealership cost about $40....But they don't last very long, last year I bought 3 sensors and the last time I tryed to return under warrant they refused to replace it unless I let them check my truck to see if the problem was with my truck at my cost...."ain't noway thats happening"

So I just when to Radio Shack and bought a 5-pk of 10K-Ohm resistors for .99 part # 271-1126 and unplugged the sensor and put in a resistor in the plug-in and taped it up

Thanks for posting this info. I had apps problems and thought I had heard of all the problems that can cause it. I did all of the most frequently recommended remedies and even recently replaced my apps sensor. The new one started acting up yesterday after new lift pump and fuel pressure gauge. I guess I didn't bleed all the air out. Did a more thorough job of bleeding the fuel system after searching and coming across this post and my TC lockout/apps issue is gone (for now, anyway!).
