Transfer case noise, what is it???
Hello,
My truck makes some noise which sounds like it comes from the t-case. It is louder the faster I go. It sounds like a whine or dry bearing or something. I have read about a clip in the back that can break?? I was thinking of trying some lucas in it or???
ANY HELP WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED.....THANKS

i just installed one of those snap ring retaining sets on my brothers 241 transfere case. remove driveshaft. pull tail housing (four bolts) snap ring should be visible behind bearing in groove. kit was 28 bucks. i already was going thru tranfere case anyway. the kit i bought was from local 4x4 trans. rebuilder.
OK I finally tore it apart (my truck hase not been getting used much lately) and the clip looks fine.
I sometimes think that it seems quieter with the o/d turned off, even at the same speed. PLEASE HELP

My old chevy S-10 used to make a loud gear whine with 4WD engaged. The ram's dont make that noise (least mine doesnt). You sure you got the right oil and amount in there? Should be ATF up to the top fill hole.
Id also check to make sure the case isnt trying to partially engage 4wd so that the gears are dragging. (my S10 did that too, thus the dodge)

It is full of atf.
Case shifts in and out of 4wd well.
Makes this noise in 2hi, havent driven it on the road in 4hi much to know if it does or not.
I am not 100% sure it is in the transfer case????
thanks

Ran the truck with only the front half of the shaft in and it still makes the noise. Changed fluid and it had some shinney stuff, but not real bad. Re-filled the case and it still makes a bit of noise, but is better. Not sure what to do next????
my truck did that and it got bad it ended up being the front drive shaft the u joints went out and had to have the whole thing rebuilt. This was after getting the t case rebuilt twice do to that snap ring then i put that coupler on there nothing has gone wrong yet.

It isn't cheap. I will say that the front driveshaft does not spin in 2wd, at least any noticeable amount. That is the whole reason for CAD. I say make sure it is full and the shift linkage is adjusted properly, it may run for 4 days or 4 years. That is unless you have the $$$'s and want to take it out and rebuild it. I have tore into mine but never actually rebuilt one, but I think anyone with mild mechanical experience and a good set of tools can do it for a descent price. You should however make sure that it is most likely the t-case, check U-joints and related items before you go spending money on that t-case.
Both of my trucks are making noises too but im not sure what they are from. one i think my be 5speed bearings since its louder in 5th then 4th and dosent make it in 1-3. Mine i dont know. However I understand quad4x4.com will be comming out with a 241 manual soon. it should explain how to rebuild it. I have the 4500 manual and its done well. lots of pictures just like I like! perhaps with the use of something like that you could manage to rebuild it on your own?
My truck has a whine, sounds like its similiar to yours. Only does it when it hits OD so I thought the OD was going bad. My tranny/TC is going out so I just chock it up to that. I have a newer tranny I am going to install as soon as I can find a TC that I can use with it. I was hoping afterI do that it will be an end to the whine.
