Transfer case grinding 241 DHD

When I hit a bump like RR tracks , my T-case acts like it wants to engage into 4x4. I posted this question way back when and thought it was the CAD . I have since made my own posi loc cable and believe their is no way the collar can be the culprit . I`ve adjust the linkage and it still does it. I can lock the cad in and it wont do it because I believe the front shaft is already spinning so the t case is meshed together?

My question is , what could make the transfer case do this ? What am I missing . I have been driving the truck like this for at least 8 years , BUT, I have not had the front drive shaft in until just recently and thats when I stated hearing the noise again .

sorry so long

Worn or missing shift fork pads maybe, would need to open up the t-case to check. Or missing snap ring on output shaft, would have probably caused other issues by now though.

Maybe double check transmission mounts to make sure it isn't walking around too much.

I went back and looked at my pics from when I had the case apart . The pads look very good. From my original thread back in 08 it looks like I was having this problem and went to check the rear output shaft snap ring . The detent spring feels good also . I think I will replaced the oil soaked rubber mount just to rule that out but this really has me puzzled and aggravated. My truck still has less that 153K on the odo.

You've been dealing with this since 2008?????

I read some of the other thread and this thread and it sounds like to me that the TC linkage is out of adjustment or there's something wrong with the synchronizing mechanism. Because you have the CAD axle and when you pull the level back the TC has a synchro which speeds up the front driveshaft so the collar can engage. Meaning, there's no reason you should hear any "grinding" unless the synchro is shot.

Lets say I fixed the problem back in 08 By taking the front drive shaft out.
And it has taken me this long to want to get my 4x4 working again

I am almost to the point now that I might just leave the cad engaged while driving and only disengage it if I need 2 LOW. This way it never makes the noise

Yes, you could leave the CAD engaged. All that would do is force the driveshaft to spin full time like the non-CAD trucks. Generally not a problem as long as you have a stock height truck and the front driveshaft is completely balanced, and the u-joints are in good shape too.

But I think you'd instead want to find out what the heck is going on. As I pointed out, I think the linkage is allowed to move too easily into other shifting positions or there's something up with the synchro portion of the TC. You might want to contact places who rebuild them.

Ok. After filling up the front axle with oil 😨 and driving around today I can't get it to make the noise. I went over the rr tracks 3 times, even drove through the hood to find rough roads and hit a couple of county roads. So untI'll it does it again I am considering it fixed. I really appreciate the help. 👍

Wait.....what??? Was there ANY fluid in the front axle? I'm kinda not understanding what you think the problem is if what you just did is the fix.

I know it must sound confusing and this has had me really stumped. Back in 08 I heard the noise and asked for help. I was pointed towards the output shaft snap ring. PLUS my cad was inoperative . SO I took my front shaft out and never felt like fixing the cad or putting the shaft back in until a month or so ago

So now everything is back together and so the noise was back . I haven't drove the tuck but about 25 miles since its been back together . I have my fingers crossed .
