tranny woes again!!!

january 26 io had my tranny rebuilt. local shop built it and saisd i was good to 400hp, and to tow 20k lbs (i dont tow anything with it, the heaviest load it sees is my baseball bag in the bed)..... well i have injectors, and no fuel plate.... the tranny is crapping out again.. under normal driving conditions friday night, i glance at the gauges and see 230 degrees on the tranny temp gauge.... i was like wholy crap! i pulled in the Home Depot parking lot and idled her down and left it in nuetral to cool the fluid. Note that this thing was jhust rebuilt and i only travelled 2 miles up the road..... I pulled the stick to check the fluid and it was god awfull smelling, burnt. It was full perfectly and still pink... It supposedly had a HD rebuild kit, Transgo shift kit, and Hd converter... well the shift kit stopped shifting hard about a week ago and its been driving like hell!!! I am going to bring the truck back to the shop for the Warranty ...

I am very angry that i spent near enouggh to get my self a goerend but instead got this load!!!! Uggggg... what a pain! Any suggestions about what to tell the guy i want?

If you just had it rebuilt this Jan, it seems you might have a warranty? If so I would ask for warranty work untill I was happy with it again. If no warranty, then you might just have to rely on the guy "doing what's right", and that may be a problem. Again, a warranty should allow you to have the tranny you paid for with no hassle at all.

You are not alone, I have had my truck in the same tranny shop 4 times in the last 6 months and it is going back next week. I talked to Dave Gorend today and for now I am getting his tripple disc. He is also going to call the tranny shop and give them detailed instructions on how to fix it. I am only doing this because it is still under warranty and until I can save up for a full Gorend. Dave is a great guy and knows his buisness. In fact he trains dealership techs on how to properly fix there own tranny's. So you might want to give them a call. Keep in mind if you buy a part from him he will deduct it from a total tranny if you choose to buy one.

I'm right there with you, I can't afford the complete tranny right now myself. That is why I'm just buying the converter for now. When it I can buy the complete tranny, Dave will deduct the amount of the converter.

By the way you might want to watch your language, the mod's don't like that and you can get an incraction for that. I know from experiance.

Just call Dave he will help you even if you can't buy from him right now, he will steer you in the right direction. The first time I called him and told him what was wrong with my tranny, he gave me suggestions on how to fix it with out having to buy anything from him.

Well, as for the transmission rebuild kit, I would ask what kind of plates they put in and if they put new steel separator plates in as well. There are only two brands of plates I would trust in any transmission; Raybestos or Borg-Warner, the latter of the two being the better choice. You should ask your local transmission shop who they deal with, if they say anybody other than AXIOM then I don't know just how much I would trust that quality parts were used.

Now, as far as the problems go; they may not have used the proper scarf cut seals included in the Trans-Go shift kit on the input shaft which would cause sealing ring failure on the normal ductile iron seals that are used for stock replacements. Also, they may not have checked the end play on the input shaft allowing plenty of slack in the clutch packs. Another thing that may have happened is while installing the apply piston seals (if they even did) they may not have used the proper tools and simple patients. The seals can easily be rolled, and because they are a skirt type seal, which would result in loss of apply pressure to the clutch packs due to massive seal failure on the apply clutches. Thus resulting in clutch pack slippage... Or should they have not replaced the original seals then they failed due to normal wear and tear with the added strain of the Trans-Go's increased line pressures. Mostly, by the way it sounds, everything points to a failed seal which would drop the line pressures and in turn the apply pressures on all the clutch packs and your TCC... Also, ask if their "HD" TC is a billet front cover or just a simple drilled and tapped ring welded on the outside of a stock front cover instead of six nuts welded in place Because if that is the case then you have a slightly updated stock TC which in turn means you still have a crappy stall and a crappy lock-up clutch.

As for the TC (if they deal with AXIOM) ask them the part number of the one they put in.

CR70L or CR70X are both stock replacements with max torque specs of 550 ft lbs on stock line pressures (figure 750 to 800 ft lbs with a Trans-Go)

CR70X-S1 (billet front cover) is a custom low stall (about 150rpm below stock which is about right for 400hp) and max torque spec of 750ft lbs on stock line pressures (figure about 950ft lbs with a Trans-Go)

I highly doubt that it was an S-1 or similar though... Anyways good luck with getting your money's worth out of those guys and keep us posted on how things go.

Thursday she goes back to the shop! I got an appointment and all i got from the service department was "yeah, thats someihting im gonna want to look at".....*** hahahahah, i wish my dad wasnt so stubborn and actually listened to me.....

CAUTION :
we fought for about tewo months total time. It started a week before it went into the shop and contined through. I told him i wanted a georend and he said it was too expensive and i WAS NOT Alloed to make this thing a pullin truck, well i was definatly not shooting for pullin truck, i was looking more toward 400 horsepower. He argued that if i had it done locally the warrantee would be better and that it would be fine. Well i argued back that if thewy stockl rebuiilt it (me being in the business and knowing what we do) the transmission was not going to last. Well me being 17 and a "stupid kid" he sets up the appointment to have it rebuilt and sepnds the same as the goerend to get a crappy POS! When i got it back i knew it was not gonna last becasue it felt no different than the stocker. I called my very knowlegable uncle who kinda knew where i was coming from and said does it drive like a terd.... Well that was the best way to describe it. Here i am at 350 or so HP and the trans is on its way out again! Well I told you so Dad!

Thats why i went ahead and bought goerend stuff for mine. I was originally gonna go with A TCI converter, but man am i glad i went with Goerend now. If i was gonna take my truck and have the tranny done locally I would at least make sure they worked with diesels. Gasser shops in my opinion for the most part have no idea on anything about a diesel transmission. They dont realize they need a low stall converter. Just go ahead and buy some good parts if you have to. Its not worth it to keep redoin it
