Tranny going out
So after a two day 850 mile road trip I pulled up to a stop light, put it in neutral, and let the clutch out. Then I felt my pickup kindof surging like it was trying to move in neutral. I knew something was bad wrong. The next day I drove the other 200 miles home. When I drained the oil out of the tranny, it was very metallic looking and had chunks of fiber like stuff in it. I guess from the syncros.
So I need to either rebuild it, or try to find a good deal on an NV 4500. My question to all of you wise CTD owners is, what would you do? Does anyone know of a good source for an affordable tranny? Or is the NV 4500 rebuild easy enough for the average DIYer? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks. Marv.

I guess it depends on how bad you need the truck. I doubt it would be something you could do in a day, because you just don't know what you're going to find. There are some special tools needed, I was able to make some of them. Like a socket for the 5th gear nut, pullers for the bearings (or just cut the old ones off), also need dial indicator for setting up new bearings. May need a press to get the gearsets off the shaft.
I didn't get into it that deep, but had to swap cases as the old one was cracked. Ended up putting new bearings in it at the same time. I have heard that some of the ebay remans hold up ok, there are plenty of other options for rebuilt though. Either way that will end up running $1-1500 or better depending on the supplier. Cost of rebuilding yourself is probably no less then $500 all said and done.

Ok. Thanks Gorms. I guess I'll try a rebuilt one from smartpartsauto.com. From what I could find their price was as good or better than the rest and a 12 month unlimited warranty. They use solid brass syncros so it doesn't require the high dollar sycromesh oil. They have a sale now on their nv4500s for $1,045. $500 core and $260 freight to me and back on the core. Seems like the best option I could find.
