Tranny fluid leaking between tranny and bellhousing - HELP!

I guess its Syntorq, cause it smells.

Its getting wet between the tranny and bellhousing, and it formed a drop at the vent on the bottom of the bellhousing.

If the tranny is a little over full will it leak? Eventually level itself off?

Would the seal be damaged?

I recently had the 5th gear nut changed out on April 9th - I noticed it a while ago.

Recently formed the drip.

What should I do?

You can drain some out and see what happens, but my guess is the seal is shot.

x2

Overfull would usually leak out the vent.

Clutch will get damaged if you let it go too long and the leak gets enough fluid on it.

On a scale of changing your own oil to rebuilding an auto tranny (1-10)....I would say this is about a 6. You need to drop the trans and remove the front seal. Not sure how much is involved on a nv4500, but it is mostly time.

I just got done with a clutch job on my '97. As said above removing and replacing the transmission is mostly a time thing, nothing overly difficult. Just be sure you have a decent transmission jack. While the job can be done with a floor jack, it's much easier and safer with the real thing. The transmission weighs around 200 pounds - dropping on the floor, or worse, on yourself, would not be a good thing. Getting to the front seal is a piece of cake. Four bolts hold the input shaft bearing retainer in place. Take them out, a few taps with a plastic mallet loosens the retainer and it can be wiggled out. Remove the seal, put in a new one, replace the retainer, bolt it in with [B]new[B] bolts and you're set to put the transmission back in.

Note one: I didn't check to see if the transmission fluid level is above the opening for the bearing. You might have to drain some of the fluid before taking the bearing retainer off.

Note two: while the manual I used said to remove the crossmember supporting the transmission before removing the transfer case, it's easier to get the crossmember out with the transfer case on the ground. It's definetly easier to replace the crossmember with the transfer case on the ground.
