Trade-Up or Keep What I've Got?

95 Auto 2500Hd 290,000 Miles
Have done some research and several of you have contributed to my questions on building up the 47rh. Found a shop here in town that will rebuild the trans, install a heavier tc and better vb for $3700.00. Seems fair to me but since the trans is still working should I just sell this truck and go for a newer one? I have put 170,000 of those miles on the truck and feel that it has paid for itself. I rely on this truck everyday and it is in good working order. However, it is due for a windshield, tires, and a heater core. So all that being said and considering the miles, when do you guys suggest saying goodbye to your old friend and buying another?

I wouldn't upgrade. For less than half of what you would spend on a newer one you could fix the truck you got. If you bought a new one and then started to upgrade it how much would you spend? Even if you found a super clean low mile used truck thats a little newer, What would it take money wise to fix it the way you want? Now on the other hand if you spent the money to fix yours up. And upgrade it as ya go. Then You would have a truck that would last way more than 290,000 more miles. JMHO

I would not upgrade either...... but i'm cheap LOL. my 95 dont have all the bells and whistles of the newer ones, but, its paid for, does everything i want it to do and runs and drives like new. Economy is in the basket. stuff 5-8 k in yours and it will be like a new truck and no big payments. (or lightening yer account 45k if ya happen to have it.)If you are looking at buying a used truck you are never sure what ya get either.most people sell em when dependability starts falling off.

Get an '03-'07 5.9. The only thing I miss about my 2nd gen is the seats. The newer ones have great steering, brakes that actually stop the vehicle and you don't wake the neighborhood up.

Keep what you have, you will hate yourself down the road for getting rid of your 12V otherwise. Those engines are the most reliable ones available.

Thanks for the opinions. I have been looking at 03 and 04 quad cabs for less than $20,000.

Your right it will be hard to give up the 12 valve. I have not had to do anything to the motor other than a lift pump, head gasket and water pump, still has the original fuel system injectors and all. Is there something I can look for in my 12 valve motor that can give me some assurance that it will go another 100k? It still gets 19mpg and starts at -20f, and maybe leaks 1 quart of oil in 4000k.

your 12v will last man dont worry about that. These engines are made to keep going. you'll be just fine. you should throw up a pic of your truck.

Like many of the other Members here, I would recommend keeping your truck!

Like you, I also have a Dodge CTD 12 valve, but mine is a 1996. I bought the truck new and IMHO, they are still THE BEST diesel trucks that Dodge made!
I have also owned a 1992 Ist Gen, a 2002 24 valve, and I also have a 2006 Dodge CTD CR now. I will tell you that I am very disappointed in my 2006, even though it has the 5.9 engine it. The truck got the dreaded "Death Wobble" at 39,000 miles right before Christmas. My dealership has been good about fixing it under my extended warranty, but the dang truck only has 39,000 miles on it. I NEVER thought the truck would do that with such low mileage. I also get my fair share of "codes" from all the electronics these new trucks have. I guess I am just too "old school", but I like the old "mechanical" Dodge CTD 12 valve trucks and I may sell my 2006 and just buy another good used Dodge CTD 12 valve.

Good luck!

You said "I have been looking at 03 and 04 Quad cabs for under 20,000.00" And for under 5,000.00 you could have your truck fixed and be reliable for 200,000 + miles. Don't make much sense to me. Unless You in these economic times just have ton's of money laying around. If you do could I float a loan from ya?

Fix what breaks when it breaks, don't let things pile up. Way cheaper than payments.

Your right when I did the head gasket last winter I could see the crosshatch.

All right I am sold, going to keep it. Sure would be hard to sell after having it for so long. Looking forward to getting the trans built up. Thanks guys.
