Tools for band adjustment.

My 96 needs the tranny bands adjusted. Just wondering what special tools to have on hand prior to starting the job; don't like running all over town in the middle of a job. Any special tricks would be appreciated as well. Is the Mopar ATF-4 a decent fluid?
Thanks, cd

The band adjustment is very straight forward, all you need is wrenches. +3 or +4 is the right ATF to use. some like to torque the adjusters to 72inlbs but i just go snug and back them off to where they need to be. wrench sizes 3/4, 9/16 and maybe a 30 point torx but your truck should be the older 1/4 square, thats all it should take for the bands. You will need a 25 torx for the filter also. I back my adjusters off 2 turns on both, but others go more and less so thats up for you to decide.

Is my stock tranny a 46rh or 47rh and how can I tell. Looks like the torque specs are a little different on the bands. It'g getting a lot of miles on her and I'm just tying to limp it along. It starting to smoke like a freight train. Thanks for your help, cd

96's normally got a 47re, the trans has some kind of electronic shifting something or another but i have the rh and am not sure. the band adjustment looks the same on the dodgeram.org site. if you pull the trans dipstick it will tell you what fluids you can use. i use dexron since the stick says i can and the mopar trannys imho aren't worth a crap so i figured using chevy trans fluid would mabe help it last till i get this 4500 in here.
