timing
timing
i'm plan to get the timing set on my truck because of everything i've read about it being a possible cause of low power, low mpg, etc.

well i called the local cummins shop and they said it was a 5.2 hr job @ $80/hr so my total bill will be over $400!

is that a normal price to have the timing set? does it really take that long? ???

heck, if it's gonna cost that much, i think i'll get a timing kit and do it myself...

Re:timing
Timing is a bit of a job, but you should be able to beat that price from one of the diesel tuners in your area.

I figure 4.5 hours to time one with the pump delivery valve measurement method, and about 1.5 hours for one done with a pulse box. That assumes all the lines are in good shape and the truck is serviced regularly. A dirty or unserviced truck can add hours and hours to the job, because of everything else that has to be done to prepare.

If you take good care of your truck, I would estimate that a guy in your area with a pulse box would run you about $250 or less.
