Those of you with the tick, look here.
Good eye though! It's good, I just wrapped it up in case I got too wild with the hone. Bearings were great, I plan on checking them with a little plasti-gauge to make sure things are still in spec.
You mean besides sacrificing several virgins? My engine guy came over with a battery of measuring devices to make sure the bore was good. There is a slight taper now, but he said it was still in spec. I trust the guy, he's worked on these since he was little and his dad did before that. He's the "go to" guy in the area. So, with the bore in good shape that leaves:
1) Piston, which is getting replaced, so we're good there now.
2) Injector, which since this occured prior to my owning it, has now been replaced, but they will all be popped tested to make sure...
3) Cooling jet, which I'll test with the handy idea I got of using a bug sprayer filled with oil.
4) Bearings, also checked and look good.
Those things checked I would think I'd be good to go. Other than the obvious abuse I'm going to put it through truck pulling...
Hold on, let me go out and fire it..... ahhhh MAN! Well, ugh, it was pretty loud at times, but would sort of melt into the other sounds of combustion after it warmed up. What was funny is it would sort of come and go. Some days worse than others, but always the worst when it was cold (which makes sense now). I've got a vid of it starting with the camera up on the passenger side and I can hear it in the vid, but that's because I'm really listening for it.

When you listen to it, take your knuckles and thump them on your desk about 4 times a second, that's your pattern to listen for. Now in the vid, its kind of bad because the exhaust is rattling against the bed side, but listen for AFTER I rev it and the engine is coming down in RPM, you can hear it plain as day there, you'll hear it go up and then tick, tick, tick, tick as it's coming back down. That's it.
Plastic? Better be some tough stuff. Mine are metal in my 97.

A buddy of mine that works on equipment down around Owensville. I was just checking. He is pretty slick. I used to live in St. Louis and run around w/ a bunch of guyz from around there. We might know a couple of the same people.
FYI: Honing sucks. Honing the back cylinder while the block is in the truck is as fun as burning yourself with a propane torch. At last though, they are all done and the shiney. Now if those pistons would hurry up and get here!
