Think I found my personal grail truck, but a question 5th gear?

Guys, I think I just fell into my personal grail truck, 97 Ext. cab 4X4 loaded with 138K, best of all, it has spent it's life with an **** owner and in a heated garage.

Anyway, this truck is new,new,new........with the exception of 5th gear came loose. I know it is usually an easy fix, but many of the places I have read suggest to replace the gear every time. I really do not understand taht if there is no wear, etc?

So, whats the skinny, you guys replace the gear or not?

I'm on freakin PINS and NEEDLES waiting for the call..........

I didn't replace it on mine. I got the repair nut from Dodge, pulled the t-case and tailshaft off, cleaned it really well with brake clean, and installed the nut as recommended. Its been a couple of years since I did it with no issues.

I've repaired several without replacing the gear. I just used the mopar repair nut after cleaning the shaft real good and using plenty of locktite......never had one come loose that I know of.

i have used the mopar nut on a few trans overhauls but i always had to use the 3 piece washer that came with the fully splined mainshaft. the mopar nut comes with a bevel washer that should help. i would clean the shaft and gear and install a new nut locktite the gear and the nut and have fun.

part number for the mopar nut is 1-05013887AA
