I want to change my thermostat (old one is stuck open). I picked the the two gaskets in the picture. Do these look right? The guy behind the counter was too sure of what he was doing and I'd hate to get started and find out I have the wrong stuff.

Yep, those look like the right ones.

 

When you get it apart you'll see how it all falls into place.
The engine lift hook is part of the T-stat retainer, so that's why there's two gaskets.

 

Pretty straight forward R&R. Now the temps go up to 180°F, and then drop like a rock - just like everyone describes.

The old thermostat had a rubber seal around the body. The seal came loose and was halfway on the other side. Easy to see what my problem was.

 

The problem you describe is so common that I've taken to removing the inner gasket and trashing it.
Doesn't seem to make any difference in coolant temps.
