temp guage "dances" around????

I have noticed my temp guage will ride around 145-150 for a few seconds and then slowly rise to about 185, then slowly return to 145. this does this repeatedly all the time. Does anyone think my guage or sending unit is faulty or my thermostat is opening and closing eraticly? It takes about 20-30 seconds to get thru a "cycle" of readings. Also... is there any special anti-freeze to put in this truck?? I've heard wives tales of diesels needing special coolant or the motor will blow up or something. It is green and looks like normal prestone stuff. But I need to add some to the overflow bottle and wanted to be sure.

Or better yet try this one. No special coolants, people you've talked to were probably thinking of Pherds.
