tack 5th gear nut with welder?

Well, I have my nv4500 sitting on the floor right now, and it's going in the truck next weekend. I did some searching, but there were opposing opinions. I have a mm175 welder, so it can do a nice job without any tremendous heat to warp anything with a couple tacks. Does anyone have any real experience tacking the 5th gear nut on that could help me out? If the gear doesn't slide on the shaft, welding the nut on should take care of it permanently until somthing else has a problem right? Anyone have a pic or anything? thanks.

It's the local auto recyclers... Got a full conversion for $1750, exluding a new clutch I bought, and other wear items i bought new. The trans has a 6 month warrenty though, so thats good.

Ok, I might pop the cover off and tack it tomorrow. even a small tack is alot better than none.

Now I'm not saying its the right thing to do, or care if anyone thinks it isn't. But I hit it good, on both sides. after doing the whole nut procedure.

if it fails again.......time for full spline mainshaft or fix the NV5600 and install that.

Standard Transmission & Gear. Fully splined main shaft & updated 5th gear nut for under $300. Shipping is not that bad either & will probably be there in 2 days. All of mine were. GREAT SERVICE too. I'll probably never buy anything elsewhere for manual transmissions again.

Check 'em out:

Loss of fifth gear nut

Hello Can that nut be change by taking off the two PTO covers or do you have to drop the transmission from the truck?

Don, you don't have to remove transmission, just rear output shaft cover.

I did mine and I tack welded it too after tightening the nut. I figure if it falls again THEN I will need a kit.

Here's 2more cents. Of the 7 dodge diesels in my sig 5 were 5spds. All of them had 5th gear nuts pushed off the shaft not turned. The fix I found that worked was put two nuts on and weld them together.

So I just weld the nut straight to the threads on the mainshaft? I'm glad I had a 12 point 10mm wrench to get that rear housing off. I'd get that new mainshaft, but it's not just 300, it 50 shipping, and a couple hundred for the trans tools probably, let alone I'm not real comfortable tearing the trans apart.

That's same reason why I didn't do it.
Mainly since I wasn't sure how to handle the whole package, I figured even if I damage the shaft, the kit will include a new one, as might as well take a chance with the weld and see what happens.

I think mine is repaired forever...

I think what i'm gonna do is run it like it is, and if the nut falls off i'll weld it on, then if the 5th gear fails some other way i'll get that new mainshaft and gear.
