Unhappy Tach and gauge nightmare!

Sorry that my first post here is a whine session but I have run out of ideas. I have a 98 12 valve with some type of electronic problem. It started out with my speedo working sporadically at slow speeds. Then the problem also started affecting my tach at most at highway speeds. It will be running fine at 2100 rpm, then it will start to spike down a few times. This in turn causes my check engine light to come on, kicks me out of overdrive and shuts the charging sytem down. I've researched all you guy's threads and I first put a new alternator in as that was making a noise. If nothing else the problem got worse. Now I put a crank position sensor on. I thought that had fixed the problem, but my speedo was still acting up, and after about 15 minutes of driving the tach did the same thing and my gas gauge and blower motor shut off also, but it is better. I think it will limp me to a dealer that is 70 miles away Monday unless somebody has any other ideas..

Sounds like the same problem as the Wifes Cheep Jerokee. The speedo, tach and other gauges drop to zero and the check engine and air bag lamps illuminate. I just bashed the top of the dash every time it did it, and advised her to do the same, and all was well. O.K. It was all well with ME. She didnt think it was funny, so, I tore the cluster out, tightened all the connections up, and made sure all the connections were clean. Presto! Fixed. Might be worth a try. And it didnt sound like whining to me!

Kinda sounds like a ground problem. Check the ground on the right center support near the radio, it has blk/org and blk/wht wires going to it. According to my wiring diagram that is the ground for alot of the things your having problems with, by the way my diagram is for a 97 so it may be different.

I spoke to soon when I made this post. The engine speed sensor has cured my tach/charging symptoms. However I still have a problem with the speedo{most likely the vss sensor), and still with the instrument cluster, ABS, Brake light, including the blower motor and cig lighter, (hopefully a bad ground), I will keep posted on any new findings.
