Just wondering as I have seen quite a bit posted regarding the 5th gear nut failure on NV4500 transmissions. Are there symptoms prior to this failure that people have noticed? Reason I ask is I am hearing gear noise in 5th gear, sort of a cross between vibration and "grinding." I have always heard a little gear noise, but lately it's gotten a bit more noticeable. Just wondering what you all think. Thanks for your help!

 

Not in my case, just pluggin down the freeway and shifted to 5th, let the clutch out and nada. no noise, or prior issues. Drove it home like that for 20 miles or so.

 

mine went out at 70 mph. it was just like pushing in the clutch. no noise at all.

 

I can hear the same vibration in my truck. I think that it is just normal. But as for the sound gettin worse, I have no clue.

 

It was no big deal for me either ,, Just driving down the highway at 70MPH let off the throttle and all of a sudden,,,NO 5th gear,,,,,,,In My 5th gear case,, I have had my truck for almost two years now,,since I have had my truck it has been hard to put in second gear ,,, I could come to a complete stop,, And TRY to put it in second gear,But it would not go ,as if the clutch was not disengaging, So I would just put it into third first,, Then go to second and it would go right in,,,If the truck was rolling ,it would go right into second. Now that I have replaced the fifth gear nut with the new,Dodge TSB nut,, IT goes right into 2nd gear ,,, Everything is perfect now I hope the Dodge fix works!!

FYI, The Transmission does NOT have to come out to repair The 5th gear problem,

 

I have been without 5th gear for almost 4000 miles. To poor to get the new tranny put in. But it was silent for me as well. No big deal really. Miliage sucks though.
