swapping a 6.5l chevy with a 12v cummins?

Hmmm- I came to this page as a new diesel owner, but a long time racer. I have raced and built Chevy, Ford and Dodge, and even AMC. To quote Smokey Yunick "the engine don't know what factory it came from"- nails it well. I have respect for the TH400, as well as the C6 and the Torque flite 727. IMO- for racing, they are about equal, with a couple advantages/disadvantages each.
But this has nothing to do with a chevy/cummins swap LOL
I think that the cummins is certainly the best idea for staying diesel in anything- and one of my favorite swaps I have seen is the cummins in the 4 door ford- large cab, good bed, but the 460 sucks the fuel!
I would suggest a 12v and auto or a 12v and NV (which would be the best of all) as there would be very little electrical headaches. Cooling obviously will be a problem, as with any tow rig. I bet someone like Advance Adapters or something already has this scienced out!

I am in the process of doing the exact same swap into my 1989 GMC 1-ton 2wd dually!!!. I picked up a 1996 12-valve (215HP) and am mating it to a ETH NV5600. I am also converting the truck to 4wd and am using the dodge dana60 and using the dodge 4-link bars and my GMC coils.
As far as the engine goes....The hardest part is making the new mounts and re-fabricating the HUGE 2wd crossmember so the engine can sit nice and low. In the near future I will have alot more comments on the swap because I am taking next week off work so I can finish the project.
Good luck with yours...Ryan

I just Finished putting a CTD in a 86 4 Door dually The only easy thig was the EXHAUST... I put a 1 1/2 inch body lift for help with clearance upper radiator hose is a complete refab lower hose has slight mod NO ROOM for fan. the power steering wasn't to bad just swapped resiviors that way you can keep your hydr-boost You will need to put some serious heat guard on you AC box or buy a FIRE EXT.
