Did you loosen the allan headed bolt in the center of the heater?
The heater isn't threaded it, the allan bolt causes it to expand and seal when tightened.
Perhaps you may not even need to remove it, just tighten the bolt to stop the leaking.

there was no bolt going through the block heater. ive change several block heaters on other vehicles and have never seen one like this. it has to be changed, the block heater doesnt work. ive heard some heaters have springs holding them in but have never seen one.

finially got it out. it was in the frost plug hole so i knew it had to come out one way or the other. finally got a hole drilled through it and got a punch wedged in it. then with the help of a cheater bar on the end of the punch it finaly came out. heres a pic in case someone else runs into the same thing. ive never seen another heater like it. thanks for all the tips.

what year of truck was that installed into?

97 3500 4x4. judging by the looks of the heater it must be driven into the frost plug hole. once the washers go through the block they would catch and not let the heater come out. thats my guess by looking at it, but not positive. like i said before, i've never seen anything like it and neither has anyone i've shown it to. makes for a good conversation piece though.
