still have a slight miss after timing???

got my pump timed & back on & everything up & running & I still have a slight miss when free reving the motor & a slight hesitation in the first couple gears once in awhile if you're way light on the pedal???? could my injectors or overflow valve or something else be the cause of the miss, I revved it up once off idle tonight & it shot a flame out the exhaust??? I hope the exhaust still had some fuel in it from my timing mishap( found TDC on the exhaust stroke & filled the cylinders up with fuel ) & in case you're wondering yes I've changed the oil already!! so what could be the cause of the miss, I have a timing kit in the mail so I might check the timing & make sure it's where I think it is, or should I say where the pump shop told me it was!! thanks for any info., Dusty

I've come to learn this is a fairly common 12-valve problem, but sometimes a bear to resolve. Have you ever had the injectors looked at? Have you ever serviced your prefilter and replaced the O-rings on the bowl and preheater puck? It could be you are drawing a bit of air somewhere.

How many miles on the truck? Did it start all of a sudden?

I bought the injectors used, & I need to check the prefilter & bowl, & the problem is something that has been around since i bought the truck w/82,000 miles on it, & it now has 123,000, I had a 96' 3/4 ton that done basically the same thing & after having it timed it was smooth as silk, but I've seen other trucks that timing didn't seem to help very much, I did notice that the stumble in the lower gears (after the engine got up to operating temp.'s) seemed to either start or be more noticeable after I installed the injectors??? it's not a huge issure & I can drive around it fairly easy, & I plan on going bigger with the injectors pretty soon anyway, so that's the main reason I've not messed with them thus far. I'll do some checking on the prefilter & see if there might be a problem there, thanks, Dusty

I've found that fuel starvation will cause it- maybe overflow valve, lift pump or plugged filter. The most common cause is late timing. It's real easy for it to slip as you are torquing the nut. Happens to me often. I'd wait for the timing kit and give it a check. The flame however, is a new one to me.

the flame was new to me too!!! I'd say I still had a little bit of fuel settled in the muffler??? I'm gonna check things over when I get the timing kit, it should be here tomorrow, I may go ahead & order an OF valve as well, I need to check the prefilter also, seems like one of the more "overlooked" important parts of the 12-v's, I'll check those & then get my timing checked out asap & see where it stands, the pump shop that timed my pump on the stand had it at 16.5* & had the pump pinned when I picked it up, so is it safe to say that by pinning the pump & putting the motor back at TDC then reinstalling the gear I'm back to 16.5*, given that the gear didn't slip while I torqued it?????
