Steering box, replace or reseal?
The steering box on my '91.5 leaks from both ends. It's not horrible, yet, but it is marking it's territory and making a mess of everything below it. I've replaced the drag link and just put new ends on the tie rod. There is still some play in the wheel and I can see the joint in the steering shaft at the box needs replacement. I've used Borgeson shafts before and I intend to order one soon, but as long as I'm messing with things I figure I should address the leaks too. The truck has 180k miles on it. The easy way would be a rebuilt box. How much should I expect to pay and where's the best place to get one from? I've never had one apart, but unless there are special tools or something I'm fairly sure I can handle doing it myself too.
I've never had one apart either, not interested in it either. I can say I went with a Napa reman, and next time I'll spend the extra dough on a Redhead or...I forget the other big brand. It still had the same slop in the wheel within a few hundred miles. No leaks though. The newer style box (not a reman of the o.e. part) uses a bigger sector shaft, less power assistance on center to slow wandering, etc etc.
I went with the borgeson unit and its been pretty good to me. Only catch is it sits further out from the frame rail so youll need to crank about an inch out of the drag link.
Also, the sector shaft stabilizer for the OEM box will not fit. You can make it fit by elongating the holes with a drill and burr.
