Starting fluid?!
Starting fluid?!
I was reading the owners manual at the Cummins QuickServe site and came across this instruction under starting procedures:
Spray starting fluid into the air cleaner intake while another person cranks the engine.
Umm, this seems to contradict the huge sticker on my air box that says not to do this?
What gives?

Those instructions are probably for industrial engines without intake heaters. A hot intake heater and either would not be a good thing. Even at that its got to be pretty cold for one not to start without help.
Using Ether on an engine equpped with grid heaters is a real quick way to launch your intake into orbit....no to mention any of your body parts that happened to be in the way
That has to be for an industrial application like Mike said, on an engine that does not have the grid heaters.

Our case tractor has a 3.9 with no grid heater , comes standard with an either start button , but it has to be REAL cold in order to need it , generally when it is that cold we plug it in. In the 5-6 years we have owned the machine we have not used half a can of either on it.
