starter rebuild....lift pump and larry b parts...

For awhile I ve had a suspicion power was falling off on my 12 valve. Well the starter went out in the driveway....barely cranking....(in hind sight it was cranking slow) but it always fired up right away so hard to tell. So I ordered a starter rebuild kit from Larry b.....cool...and since I thought..im ordering stuff...Ill get that lift pump and the fuel pressure gauge...(it is christmas time right).

I tossed in a relay too...

Well a couple days goes by and I get the stuff...I rebuild the starter..and just for reference I could not solder the rope size terminals of the brushed back on...I just miged them back on in frustartion. It worked great , I cant believe it turns over so fast now. Anyways my brushes were worn all the way down.

But when Im laying under my truck with the starter off...Im like well now is the time to change the lift pump cause itll be easy with the starter off. Wow...is that oil? Is that my oil leak Ive never been able to locate? YES it is....as I pull off the old lift pump...the gasket was fubared on install (I did it).

Well I get the new lift pump on....cant possibly see doing it with out removing the starter btw. Then install my rebuilt starter. Well I already put the lift pump on so I dont know my old fp.....so I put the gauge on and the adjustable over flow valve. Prime pump...fire up truck....all great...

Fp is 27 at idle...and I can tell immediately its running differently. Just idle and reving it....its back....I was right it was down on power...take it for a drive...wth....its pulling hard....40 -50 psi easy....part throttle. Now I need to retune....again. Im guessing my old lift pump was way down....and if you do the starter....for 75 $ its a great time to do the lift pump too.

And just for reference larrys stuff comes with gloves....and a bandaid....nice touch....and an obvious watch your hands marker...glad I didnt need the bandaid.

Good info. I didn't know about the band-aid.

Question on maybe bad lift pump?

I too believe my lift pump is bad on my 96'. Im not sure though, heres the symptoms. I have to crank and crank and crank for it to fire. So im losing prime. ok, I go to pump the primer bulb and it shoots fuel out from somewhere around the LP. Any ideas? thanks in advance.

The rubber hose that comes out of the IP for the fuel return is notorious for rotting and allowing air into the system you need to replace the rotten rubber lines with good quality diesel rated fuel line. It is wise to replace all the rubber lines including the short pieces on top of the fuel tank.

okay I will look into doing that, I however am concerned about the fuel spray when I try to prime the ip. I suppose maybe could be the bad fuel lines.? Is there a fuel line kit for the given truck available for purchase or just a piece it together application?

I had the Larry b's overflow on my old second gen and fixed my low pressure problems up too. If you guys have a fuel psi gauge on you trucks and think your lift pump is weak you can pinch your return line with your fingers and see if it builds up pressure fast. Mine had 430k on it and still seemed healthy
