stalling in gear, black smoke

I just purchased a 1998 12v with a 173,000 miles on the clock (auto). When i first went to look at it , it would stall when put in gear, but ran good otherwise. So for 2,000 dollars it didn't bother me. Got it home looked every thing over turned up the idle, still would stall with black smoke. I pulled the injectors because i figuired they where original (they where). For 45 dollars a peice i had them rebuilt with the 215hp nozzles. The shop owner told me to pull the fuel plate 1mm towards the mounting flange. First question : Did i move it the right way, towards the front of the truck? Second Question: I moved the afc housing towards the cab of the truck to try to stop the stalling, black smoke and rough running when in gear at idle am i missing something here? Sorry first 12V But i love all the adjustability (power wise). A lot nicer with out the computers. (My other Ram is a 06') Thank for the help!! I need alot of it!!

For some reason it sounds to me like you are not getting enough air, or something is wrong with the pump, and it's fueling too hard at idle. Id check the whole intercooler system with pressure, and also, this may sound dumb, but be sure the air filter is clean. If the idle is high enough, it shouldnt be dying unless there is another problem. Moving the plate forward(to front of truck) adds more fuel under boost(When driving), and moving the AFC back towards the cab should give less fuel at no boost. Like I said. I would pressurize the intercooler system, and make sure the turbo spins freely.

thanks for the reply. I checked the turbo end play, looked to be in good shape when i was removing the silencer ring. I checked all of the rubber hoses on the intercooler system. But i did not pressure test the intercooler itself. When at wot it pulls hard no signs (noise) of a boost leak. I forgot to mention i adjusted the valves also. New air filter too.

sound like to me the torque converter lock up switch is constantly locked. You put it in gear and its like no clutch on a standard! Has someone put an external lockup switch on it? Does it have an exhaust brake?

You slid the AFC the wrong way, push it all the way forward.
Sliding it all the way back will turn any truck into a dog.
