smokey haze at idle

Hey all, new to the site.

I recently bought my second Dodge diesel and am so far very satisfied with the truck. I have noticed that the truck will smoke from the exhaust when it idles. It smells and looks like raw fuel. It will smoke like this anytime the truck sits for more than about 30 seconds or so, not matter how warm or cold the engine is. The truck has 297,000 miles, and other that the mods listed below, should be stock. The head was off of it at a qualified shop not all that long ago after the gasket blew, so I am going to assume that it is not a blown gasket again. My mileage has been hanging around 20 mpg and the truck runs very well. So this problem is nothing more than a nuisance to me. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

John

Has it been timed? Timing in the injection pump can slip causing some different issues, one being some haze at idle.

The timing was advanced, then taken back to stock or close to stock before I got the truck. My old 97 was advanced to 16* and I saw no smoke except during cold start. I would assume that this one is back to around 12.5*. Do you think it might have retarded back a little further than that?

Are you sure it doesnt have upgraded/aftermarket injectors?
If it doesnt, I would re-check your timing. It can slip pretty easily if the pump shaft wasnt cleaned properly.

I am almost positive that they are the stock 215s. The truck runs good, but not good enough to have huge injectors in it. Plus, I have never seen one smoke like this one does after it gets warm.

Check the timing then. It probably slipped.

Check your fuel pressure. The Overflow valve might be worn out. Cheap, easy fix.

overflow valve is in the lift pump? Isn't the ticking noise I hear the lift pump?

Nevermind, don't know what I was thinking. Overflow valve is in the front of the injection pump.
