small oil leak ??

hey guys. im starting to get a small spot of oil under my rig when parked. it looks like the oil is coming from the valve covers. i know the 2 rear valve covers were seeping a bit when i bought the truck over a year ago. can the valve covers on these beasts leak enough to cause a few drips on the grond?? what kind of job is it to install new valve cover gaskets ? im heading to fla next week so i will not do it till i get back. i hate to risk the chance of something going wrong before heading out.... thanks guys, scott

It is very possible that the oil is comming from the valve cover gaskets. They are a snap to change. Just pull the long chrome cover off first (the one that says Cummuns on it) it takes a 3/4 in wrench. Then pull each individual valve cover off (15mm). Clean the valve covers off and the sealing surface then reinstall.
Good luck,
Scott

If the leak is more to the drivers side it is prob. the blowby tube.

I thought I had this as well but after I cleaned the engine I think it is actually the injector return line leaking. See the thread INJECTOR RETURN LINE LEAKING in this section. Maybe it's not oil?

Get the grey gaskets if you replace them, not the black. It's a cinch job. The last cover can be a pain, just take your time.

ok heres what i saw uner the truck .......laying on my back, feet stickingout beneath the front bumper. if u look up where the power steering resevoir is but behind it towards the cab, u can see a shiny part up there and that seems to be where the dro of oil starts. i hope some1 can picture in their head what im looking at.

Sounds like the vacuum pump seal is leaking, quite common. Dodge will tell you that you have to buy a new pump. Cummins will sell you the seal and o-ring that need replacing.
