sluggish off the line

My 94 5 speed CTD is a little sluggish of the line in 1st. What could be causing this. Turbo spooling slowly?? I have #8 plate with BHAF.

I will be switching to a 4" exhaust with Magnaflow muffler this Sunday. I am hoping the exhaust will help some with bottom end. Any thoughts....??

Thanks......

Dave

Loosen that starwheel,

or chances are that the timing has slipped, first gear is a wicked take off gear, you might wanna try second too.. See how that works..

Will do

I will check the govenor adjustment arm this weekend. Now to adjust the arm you have to take the cover off the rear of the AFC housing??? So it is a different spot than where I put my plate, correct??

My truck is a 5 speed. With L, 2, 3, 4 OD. I always start in 2. I think I said 1st early. Anyway. My truck is very sluggish off the line. Then about the middle of the intersection it takes off great...

So I will start the governor. And then get the timing checked.....

About the fuel shut off solenoid needing to be in the "Run" position of pulled up to set governor. Where is fuel shut off solenoid located????

And is there a good link to changing out the governor spring?? It took me 45 minutes to change out to a #8 plate. How long will it take on the governor spring???

Thanks guys....

yes adjustment to gov arm is on rear of pump, arm is visable under afc housing and under the fuel plate, don,t remove plate just the afc housing.

here is a engine parts diagram http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/Fac...ocations-l.gif

i would slide your plate back alittle from full forward and here is a link to gov. springs, there are 2 sets of springs

Take the plug out of the top of the AFC housing and turn the star wheel toward the top of the engine. About 4 clicks and run it. 4 more , try again.I think the plug takes a 10 mm allen wrench

Exclamation

Well I ran into a small problem. I had adjusted the governor the wrong way. No power and more smoke than three diesels......

I was looking at the wrong side of the fuel plate. Got that figured out. But a issue from the wrong adjustment was a puddle of either fuel or oil under my truck?

Was I dumping to much fuel some where with the incorrect adjustment and flooded something? Or worse??? Took it to the pressure washer and cleaned it up. Could not seeing anything leaking. But noticed the boot on my fuel solenoid is cut. Also I only put three screws back in the AFC housing. Can fluid come out the open bolt hole???

Anyway truck is running much smoother. Before it was sluggish of the line then it would pick up. Now it feels much smoother through each gear. I have the star wheel completely forward. Did not really change my smoke much. But better low end response.....

So if I had the governor adjusted the wrong way would that do? I had so much smoke I could not see the cars behind me..... My 5 year old son said Holy Shiz Narts Dad..... It's smoking now....!!!!

Thanks....

Ah Ha...!!!! I think it might be leaking from the inspection plate I took off to adjust the governor arm. I do not remeber a seal when I took it off....!!!! I am assuming the seal fell off the inspection plate when I removed it......???

Yes, there is a gasket
Yes, it is easy to drop when removing the cover.

edit:
Added image from Piers instructions that shows the adjustment screw and the black gasket surrounding the opening

If the lever dives under the plate it also dives under the AFC foot causing smoke and the power hang up Piers describes. Excess fuel at low rpm produces smoke, not power.

gasket

I had the fuel shut off solenoid bracket botled under the AFC housing. Causing it to leak.... Ha ha......

I had a hard time seeing the fuel plate to assure I was getting the correct adjustment for the governor arm. So in this pictures the red is where my governor arm hits now. And the green is where it should hit? I am going to work at it again on Sunday......
