Seems to loose power on hills...

So our 98 12 valve is running good. Since we have been hauling our 11K pound fifth wheel around the Great Lakes, there are times when it seems to loose its get up and go.

We will be coming up on a hill, shut off OD, and the truck is going 60 MPH and slowly loses speed until it gets to around 35 mph.

Skinny pedal is down and the rpms are around 2000 steady. The truck just plods along until it crests the hill and it slowly gains speed.

If we stop for 30-45 minutes and continue down the road it is fine...

It is a stock trans, and no mods on the engine.

THANKS

Don't have a gauge (ya I know) but there is a Torx OFV. I do have the potentiometer installed.

At WOT it just crawls up the hills sometimes...

Boost? EGT? That may help to troubleshoot.

If it's maintaining rpms I have to think torque converter slipping.

I am slacking in the gauge department...

I am thinking it possibly might be the fuel filter? Wouldn't the RPMs race if the TC was slipping? It feels like something is holding or pulling the truck backwards as I climb the hills. We are talking 1-2 mile grades. I know the trans probably needs a few upgrades like a valve body, TC and maybe clutches...but it seems to be OK. Not that I would try competetion pulling with it as it is.

I am going to replace the fuel filter and install an auxillary cooler on the tranny when I get to Detroit on Monday.

If the tranny is already slipping, the cooler isn't going to help much. The damage is done.

So once again, the Dodge already has a pretty stout transmission cooler installed by PO. Seems to be a fuel flow issue. CHanged the fuel filter and it runs a little better.

What are the chances it is the lift pump or the P7100?
Who has a good replacement injection pump?

Here again, you can spend thousands of dollars throwing pumps at it, and unless you are SURE you have 22-25 PSI at idle and 32-35 PSI at WOT, you will just be throwing good money after bad.

The P7100 is not a pump that has problems.

I know you have that fancy overflow valve, but without knowing what the fuel pressure is, you have no idea if it is helping, or hurting you.

Just to clarify, fuel pressure would decrease at WOT under load. The 32-35 psi spec is at 2500 rpm, no load.

LOL, Must not have mine loaded enough then, she sets rock steady at 35 PSI at WOT.

But yea, 2500 RPMs is the official number.

THanks.

I made it over the Appalachians (I-77) and the Dodge did better with a fuel filter change.

The coming weeks I am going to add gauges (Fuel, Boost, EGT) and then some temp gauges later...

I have 1 month before going back to work and would like to swap out the dash and harness before starting the gauges and engine mods.

Just need more fuel. 13mm pump sucks down the pressure a bit.
