rough starting wont stay running.......

hey fellas im trying to help a buddy of mine out. he has a 96 3500 2wd auto with about 170k on her, stage 2 torque plate and a freshly rebuilt 46re to HD status with double clutch TC. he is having a issue when starting his truck, if he fires it up without getting on the throttle a little then she starts hard and then will die after like 2 seconds sometimes he has to do this 3-5 times before it wants to stay running. and then other times it will fire up and stay running with no problem. i know a little about 24v cuz thats what i have but not a whole lot about the 12v. im thinking it sounds like the lift pump to me, what do you guys think?? thanks for the time fellas

What is his Idle RPM?

750-800 or she might well do it, especially with a tighter TC.

He needs to get used to depressing the throttle a little or turn up the idle.
I prefer to give mine a little pedal, it gets so you don't even think about it.
People are spoiled by newer computer controlled engines where you don't have do anything but turn the key.
The 12 valve uses WWII technology that requires a little human interaction.
