replacing oil pan

anyone done this on a 4X4 and have some tips on doing it? Friend of mine needs to replace his because it is cracked around the drain plug. He already bought a new pan from Dodge just want to know if there are any tricks to doing it easier or possibly anything that could be damaged when doing this. Thanks

Read the service manual. Also perform a search here. It came up a while ago and there were varying opinions on the procedure.

The book states that on a 4x4 you need to drop the transmission and transfer case to allow the pan to slide back and out. Good luck and have fun!

Dont quote me on this, cause I have yet to do it, but Ive read that you have to loosen the motor mounts anduse an engine crane to lift the engine = you can then slide the pan out. Dropping the tranny seems like a lot of work.

Remove fan, pull motor mount bolts lift or jack engine up like 4 in. pan should come out. that is how I got mine out.

sometimes you need a little extra room to get the pan out, if you do loosen the cab mounts and jack up the cab so you can get the eng up another inch or so. I think you have to remove the oil sump after you drop the pan to get it out of the truck.
