Replaced seals and still leaking
Replaced seals and still leaking
This past weekend I replaced the rear pinion seal and the transfer case seal going to the front driveshaft. Both are already leaking. What could be the problem. I thought I did everything right.
When I removed the driveshaft from the rear there was a lot of play in the yoke. Is this normal? When everything was bolted back up it was tight again. Is there any chance I got the wrong seals or could the seals have been bad?
Also, which transfer case and rearend do I have? It's a 96 auto. Any help or advice is appreciated.

Should be a D70 and a 241HD or 241DHD. I lost several seals in my D80 due to a plugged vent, so might want to check those out. Are there grooves worn into the yoke? Might need a speedi sleeve on the rear. Not sure if you can use a sleeve on a slip yoke though.
My yolk had a very slight scratch from the factory that took out the seal. Right away it started weeping on and off. The dealer did nothing. I found the scratch when I changed out the seal. I just dressed it out with a fine stone and it,s been good since. I have to question WHY it was installed like that in the first place?
