Is it possible to replace my 1997 47re with a newer 48re ? Or even better with a 68re ?

What would I need to change ?

You can just rebuild the 47RE to make it into a 48RE. Call Georend and he can build it or sell you the parts for it.

 

Yes you can, you will need a different trans Neutral saftey switch and you'll need to switch the electronics between the two valve bodys

 

the 48 runs higher pressures and will set govenor voltage faults in your pcm, then the trans will go into limp in. build your 47 with 48 planetary gears and upgrade baskets and discs. install a shift kit to the minimum drilling specs and you'll be happy for the street. if you have acess to parts use 48 converter, pump and stator.

All 48RE parts will fit into your 47RE core.
