Anyone know a good link with instructions on changing the rear main seal on a 95 cummins. Mine seems to drip a little and my trans is out currently so I can get to it and want to change.Very hard?Do you need to drop pan?

 

Just changed my rear main seal. Bought the seal from Cummins. The seal comes with a plastic ring for guiding the ID over the crank, and a steel ring for for installing the seal. The purpose of the steel ring, is to set the depth of the seal in the block.

As for instructions...don't know of any online. I used my shop manual, and explained things very well. As for removing the old seal...the manual says to drill a couple small holes at 3:00 and 9:00, use a slide hammer/bearing removal tool with a sheet metal type screw at the end, and pull the old seal out.

I cheated, and drilled a small hole at 3:00, screwed a drywall screw into the drilled hole, and pulled on the screw with a pliers...seal came right out. Just have to be careful when drilling into the seal...don't want to miss the seal, and hit your block or crank. As for a difficult job??...if you took your tranny out, seal should be nothing to change. And NO, you do not have to mess with the pan.
