Rear End Play

Hey Guys,
I have got a buddy with a 3500 that seems to be getting worse and worse with play in the rearend. Its almost hard to drive without bucking. we pulled the plug, and besides some real fine shavings , there was just one small thin piece. Any idea on how much work or how much this will be? What usually goes with one of these rear ends or what else will cause this!
Thanks

Had a similar problem with mine. Rear end noise kept getting louder and louder. Finally started leaking at the drive shaft seal. Turns out it was the pinion bearing. Had "in-and-out" play when we dropped the drive shaft to replace the seal. $700-$900 repair. Take it to a good shop who regularly does this kind of work as shimming to get the clearances correct is a critical part of the re-assembly process after replacing the bearings. A good shop will get this right the first time.
