play in rear end

Let me see if I can explain this. When I turn the rear wheels(while jacked off the ground of course), I can turn the wheels probably 1-2 inches (maybe more, I didnt measure it) before the drive shaft begins to turn. Any idea as to what has caused this and how do I fix it before It costs more money?

the truck has 240K miles, automatic, 2500

any help greatlY appreciated

I seem to have a similar problem, I notice it in reverse the most it makes a "clunking" sound with tap the throttle. To me it sounds like there is some play in the gears but that's about as far as I can go with it.

You might want to check your ujoints and make sure they are good and tight. I had a 94 3500 and by the way it felt and sounded when i put it in reverse, i wouldve swore the rear end was shot. When we pulled my tranny we of course had to pull out the driveshaft. The rear most ujoint was completely shot. Not even 1 needle bearing in the whole thing Come to find out, the rear end was actually pretty tight with the new ujoint

Guys, don't worry about it, its pretty normal for higher mileage trucks...

But check those U-joints to be sure...
