this is what Pourindiesel told me about retorquing factory headstuds.

Yeah just do one bolt at a time when retorquing the factory bolts. Make sure to oil the bolt before re-inserting this will ensure equal torque across the whole fastener. I use 105NM + 90* (thats factory torque).

Two months ago I retorqued my stock head bolts and found that most were loose. Truck only has 74K miles. I've since put in some ARP studs. But I think not retorquing the head bolts every so often is a sure way of ending up with a blown head gasket. As long as you stay within the torque spec's the bolt should not break.

Yes..you can reuse head bolts. I have done it many times on stock motors using a strech gauge that cummins provides. MY advice to you since I have done this set-up many times is to purchase new head bolts as I always do when installing a head gasket. It is cheap insurance and cheaper than studs. When you remove the head and the old gasket, CLEAN ( brake cleaner and compressed air work very good just watch the eyes!!!) and CHECK evey single bolt hole there are 32 in all I believe. When you install your head and new HG apply a lite coat of 30 wt oil to the threads only. Don't dip the bolts in the oil since you do not want to hydrolock the bolt( yes it does happen). Torque the bolts to 105 ft lbs using the following sequence 40-70-90-105 using the factory torque sequence. I have run several set-up over 500 hp with .020 HG and stock bolts. Just TAKE YOUR TIME and do it right. Cleanliness is the key.

do the bolts actually loosten or do they stretch and thats why you have to retorque? maybe you could safety wire them all so they wouldn't loosten?

But you would have to drill holes in all of them, seems like a lot of trouble.

I would not retorque head bolts, we have seen too many failures from doing this. If you need more clamp load go with studs...... Studs are an inexpensive insurance for blown headgaskets.
