Quick Alternator Question

Quick Alternator Question
I have searched the web and my Haynes manual which is fair at best. Just finishing the wiring in my 96 12v powered Ramcharger and need a bit of help on the alternator wiring.
I have the external regulator all ready to go, but on the alternator itself there are (2) field posts (small / side by side) (1) power hookup that is highly sheltered on all sides, (2) clamps / posts that the little wiring bracket attaches to and finally (2) longer heavy gauge wires. One is longer than the other so I was assuming one was for the drivers side battery and the other for the passenger side.
However on the shorter heavy gauge wire I am grounded so my questions / assumption is, Does the longer heavy gauge wire run to the drivers side positive terminal and the shorter wire run to the passenger side negative? Other wise I am not sure why I am grounded through the shorter heavy wire.
Appreciate the help,

if i am understanding you the black box looking thing with two terminals on it is for your field windings. and the short heavy gage on the end is the battery pos the longer one which would normally be the top heavy gage lead is grounded and it is usally connected under the radiator hose at the top of the block.
i had to hunt for the ground connection location on mine because it had been 4 weeks since i took it loose
before i got a rebuilt pcm i used
used a new 79 dodge reg $8.00 and a
repair pigtail harness for the 79 voltage reg $5.88 standard P/N S-573

The diagram on page 12-19 of the Haynes manual provides you with the wiring schematic. Be sure you are using the correct regulator, as the field on these is a 5-8 volt energized field normally driven by the Dodge PCM, and a non-resistor type of regulator will burn them out in a blink.
Also use a 120 Amp fuse on the main power wire to the battery positive, or you run the risk of a very expensive flash bulb.

Thank you,
I'll go back and check my wiring and make sure I have the right reg.
One of the issues I have found is that with age etc. the tracer on the wire black with grey has disappeared so the 12-19 is somewhat of a guesstimate. But I think I have fiqured it out. It makes sense that one of the leads would be ground and the other the charger feed back tot he battery, but I still need to get the 120 amp fuse.
Thanks again,
