The book shows a visible slot, perhaps someone knows the dimension of the stock timing pin, you could use a suitable sized drill bit for a temporary pin.

Yes, you can pull the number 1 injector and find TDC with a dial indicator, just be SURE you are on the firing stroke, but withy a gauge on the lift pump cam you will know.

Do you have a mirror? You can pull the plug out of the side of the pump and just look for the little arm to swing around. That will be the stock timing.

If the "little arm" comes around to the center of the hole and the engine is at TDC this would be stock timing for that engine. The timing pins on these engines are not the best things to go by, however they can give you some idea. Also this can all be changed by a pump shop, they can set up the pump for more/less timing when the "little arm" is centered and the engine is at TDC ......hope this helps

How do you know if you have slipped the gear? There would be no relation to TDC unless you check that too.

You always have to check TDC. If you're not at TDC, lift numbers aren't going to give you what you want.

yes, I agree--so then what does the "arm" location mean? Nothing? It won't tell you jack if the truck has been changed at all.

This is just how Cummins wants you to install a stock pump on a stock engine, I think that what the orig poster wanted to know.

It will time it to where the pump rebuilder wanted it set to. Set engine at TDC, set the pump so the arm is in center of the hole, lock it up. Thats how you'd do it if you don't have the dial setup.
